Nursing Homes
What is a Nursing Home?
Nursing homes, also known as skilled nursing facilities, provide residents with round-the-clock medical and personal care. Facilities are staffed with registered nurses, practical nurses and nurses' aides.
Typically there are two types of nursing home care:
1) Short-Term Care: Typically for seniors who are recovering from surgery, illness or are needing PT
2) Long-Term Care: best for residents who cannot care for themselves and need medical and custodial care beyond the capability of an assisted living facility
Nursing homes typically offer private and semi-private rooms with shared bathrooms (either between roommates or between two private rooms).
Unlike assisted living facilities, nursing homes treat patients medically. They typically do not provide social activities.
If you are considering a nursing facility for a loved one, it is encouraged to take the time to thoroughly research and vet any nursing facility carefully. Long term residents are typically frail and have impaired cognitive function, which can make it challenging for them to be proactive in their own health care management.
